How Potholes Damage Your Tyres — and What to Do About It

UK roads are increasingly pothole-ridden, and tyre and wheel damage from potholes is at a record high. Learn how to spot the damage and what to do next.

Hitting a pothole at speed causes a sharp impact that compresses the tyre against the wheel rim. This can cause immediate damage such as a puncture or blowout, or more subtle internal damage including broken cords within the tyre structure. One of the most common outcomes is a sidewall bulge — a visible bubble on the side of the tyre where the internal reinforcement has been damaged. A tyre with a sidewall bulge is structurally compromised and must be replaced immediately.

Beyond the tyre itself, potholes frequently damage alloy wheels, bending or cracking the rim in ways that may not be immediately visible. A damaged rim can cause air to leak slowly, meaning a tyre that appears fine after a pothole strike may develop a slow puncture days later. If you notice any pulling to one side, unusual vibration, or uneven tyre wear after hitting a significant pothole, have the vehicle inspected.

If your vehicle is damaged by a pothole on a public road, you may be entitled to claim compensation from the relevant highways authority. Keep a note of the exact location, take photographs, and report the pothole to the council. Castle Mobile Tyres can provide documentation of the damage sustained if needed for an insurance or claims process.
